Iron Infusions
At Norwest Central Healthcare, we offer iron infusions as an effective and efficient way to treat iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia.
Iron is essential for many of the body's vital functions, including the production of healthy red blood cells. When iron levels are too low, it can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
Iron Infusion Services
For many people, oral iron supplements are the first line of treatment. However, some cases require a more direct approach — that’s where iron infusions come in.
When is an iron infusion recommended?
Iron infusions may be recommended if:

-
Ferritin levels are critically low (typically <10 ng/mL)
-
Oral iron supplements are not tolerated due to side effects like gastrointestinal discomfort
-
Malabsorption syndromes (such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease) prevent effective absorption of oral iron
Rapid replenishment of iron stores is needed, such as before major surgery, during pregnancy, or when anaemia is severe.
What to expect
The iron infusion itself usually takes around 20 minutes. However, we ask that you allow approximately 1 hour for the full process, which includes:

-
Initial set-up and preparation
-
The infusion administration
-
Monitoring for a short period after the infusion to ensure there are no adverse reactions
Most patients tolerate iron infusions very well and are able to resume normal activities shortly after the appointment.
Possible side effects
While iron infusions are generally safe, potential side effects can include:

-
Mild headache or dizziness
-
Temporary changes in taste
-
Mild nausea
-
Rarely, allergic reactions

Our team will monitor you closely throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.
